How to Arrange a 3+2+1+1 Sofa Set in Your Living Room
Share
A 3+2+1+1 sofa set gives you flexibility, but the room can feel crowded if every piece is pushed against a wall. The best layout depends on your focal point, walking paths and room shape.
Layout 1: The balanced conversation arrangement
Place the 3-seater as the main anchor, position the 2-seater opposite or at a right angle, and use the two single chairs to close the remaining side. This creates a conversation zone around the coffee table.
Layout 2: TV-focused arrangement
Position the 3-seater facing the television. Place the 2-seater at 90 degrees and use the armchairs on the opposite side or corners, angled slightly toward the centre.
Layout 3: Open-plan zoning
In an open-plan home, the back of the 3-seater can help define the living area. The 2-seater and chairs can then face inward, creating a clear zone without building walls.
How much space should you leave?
Keep the main walking paths clear and avoid placing the coffee table so close that people have to squeeze past. Exact clearances depend on the room and furniture dimensions, so tape the sofa footprints on the floor before delivery if you are unsure.
Should every piece touch the wall?
No. Pulling the furniture slightly away from the wall can make a large room feel more intentional and improve conversation. In small rooms, however, using the perimeter efficiently may be necessary.
Where should the coffee table go?
Centre it around the main seating group rather than the room itself. For sizing guidance, see our coffee table size guide.
Measure before arranging
Before choosing a layout, read our 3+2+1+1 measuring guide and browse the 3+2+1+1 sofa collection.
Once the seating layout is set, choose a coffee table that fits the open space, then use side tables where extra surfaces are useful beside chairs or sofa arms.
