How to Measure Your Living Room for a 3+2+1+1 Sofa Set

A 3+2+1+1 sofa set can create a complete, coordinated living room, but the room needs enough space for all four pieces to feel intentional rather than crowded. Before choosing from our luxury sofa sets in Melbourne, measure both the room and the delivery path.

1. Draw the room and record the fixed features

Measure the room wall to wall and make a simple sketch. Mark doors, windows, fireplaces, built-in cabinetry, television locations, vents and any opening that affects furniture placement. Record the direction each door swings so a sofa does not interfere with it.

2. Measure each sofa piece, not only the largest one

A 3+2+1+1 configuration includes a three-seater, a two-seater and two individual seats. The arrangement can be more flexible than a single sectional, but the total footprint is larger than the dimension of the three-seater alone. Compare the listed width and depth of every piece with your room plan.

3. Test the layout on the floor

Use painter's tape, newspaper or flattened cardboard to mark the footprint of each sofa. Walk through the room as you normally would. Check whether you can comfortably reach doors, windows and storage and whether the seating still feels connected as a conversation area.

4. Protect the main circulation routes

People should not need to squeeze between furniture to cross the room. Keep a clear main path from entrances to the rest of the home and avoid placing the back of a sofa directly across a high-traffic route unless the room is wide enough to support it.

5. Allow space for the coffee table

If a coffee table will sit in the centre of the sofa setting, include it in your floor plan from the beginning. A gap of roughly 35 to 45 cm between seating and a coffee table is a useful starting point for many rooms. 6. Measure the delivery path

Room measurements are only part of the job. Measure the front door, hallway widths, stair turns, lifts and any tight corners between the entrance and the final room. Note removable doors or obstacles, but do not assume a sofa can be forced through a narrow turn. If access is unusual, discuss it before delivery.

7. Check visual scale as well as physical fit

A sofa can technically fit and still look oversized. Consider ceiling height, window proportions, rug size and the visual weight of other furniture. In a large open-plan room, a complete 3+2+1+1 arrangement can help define the living zone. In a smaller room, you may prefer to use fewer pieces or position the single chairs more flexibly.
