How to Use Mirrors to Make a Room Look Bigger and Brighter
Share
Mirrors cannot physically enlarge a room, but they can change how spacious and bright it feels. The effect comes from reflected light, repeated sightlines and a stronger sense of depth.
Place mirrors where they can reflect light
A mirror opposite or near a window can bounce daylight deeper into a room. Before hanging it, check what will actually appear in the reflection; reflecting a bright wall, artwork or greenery is usually more attractive than reflecting clutter.
Use a larger mirror for more visual impact
Small mirrors add decoration, while larger mirrors create a stronger sense of depth. In narrow hallways and entryways, a generously sized mirror can make the wall feel less closed in.
Choose the right shape
Round mirrors soften rooms dominated by straight furniture lines. Rectangular and geometric mirrors can emphasise height or width depending on orientation.
Avoid reflecting visual clutter
A mirror doubles whatever is in front of it. If it reflects a busy storage area or doorway, the room can feel more crowded rather than more open.
Can mirrors work above furniture?
Yes. Above a console table, a mirror creates a focal point while adding light. If you are planning that combination, read our mirror-over-console size guide.
