What Size Table Lamp Should You Choose for a Side Table or Console?
Share
A table lamp should look substantial enough for the furniture beneath it without dominating the entire surface. Scale is more important than following one fixed height.
Match the lamp to the table
A narrow side table needs a lamp with a compact base, while a wide console can support a larger lamp or a symmetrical pair.
Consider seated eye level
Beside a sofa, the shade should provide useful light without shining directly into your eyes. Sit in the chair or sofa before finalising the lamp position.
Leave usable surface space
Do not let the lamp base consume the entire tabletop. Leave room for a drink, phone or small decorative object if the table is used daily.
One lamp or two?
Two matching lamps create symmetry on a long console. A single lamp paired with a vase, plant or sculpture creates a more relaxed asymmetrical arrangement.
Match finishes selectively
The lamp does not need to match every metal in the room. Repeating one finish or colour elsewhere is usually enough to make the lighting feel connected.
