What Height Should a Side Table Be Next to a Sofa?

A side table works best when you can reach it comfortably without leaning down or lifting your arm too high. That is why its height should be chosen in relation to the sofa rather than by a single universal number.

Should a side table be level with the sofa arm?

Ideally, the tabletop should sit close to the height of the sofa arm. Slightly lower is usually comfortable; significantly higher can feel awkward when reaching for a drink.

What if the sofa has very low arms?

In that case, choose a table that is practical for how you will use it. A lamp table may need extra height, while a small drinks table can sit lower.

How wide should a side table be?

Width depends on the gap beside the sofa and what you want to place on the surface. Measure the available floor area first and leave enough clearance for people to walk past.

Do you need a side table on both ends?

No. One table may be enough in a small room. Matching tables create symmetry, while different shapes can create a more collected look if their heights and finishes still relate to each other.

Should side tables match the coffee table?

They can match, but they do not have to. Repeating one material or finish—such as gold, glass or stone-look surfaces—usually creates enough connection.
