How to Clean a Velvet Sofa Without Damaging the Fabric

Velvet should be cleaned gently because aggressive rubbing can disturb the pile and leave a visible patch. Always start with the care instructions supplied for your exact sofa.

Remove loose dust first

Use a soft upholstery brush or a vacuum with an appropriate upholstery attachment. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid pressing hard.

What should you do after a spill?

Blot the spill promptly with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not scrub, because rubbing can push the liquid deeper and distort the velvet surface.

Do not soak the fabric

Too much moisture can create water marks or affect the backing. If the care label permits a cleaning solution, test it first in a hidden area and use as little moisture as possible.

How do you fix pressure marks?

Once the fabric is dry, gently brush the pile in a consistent direction. Some shading is normal because velvet reflects light differently depending on fibre direction.

What should you avoid?

Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive brushes, bleaching products and untested home remedies. Do not assume a cleaner that works on one upholstery type is safe for velvet.

When should you call a professional?

For large stains, unknown marks or a full clean, a professional upholstery cleaner familiar with velvet may be safer than repeated home treatment.
