How to Clean Gold, Chrome and PVD Furniture Finishes
Share
Polished metal furniture looks best when the surface is clean and free from fingerprints, but aggressive cleaning can create fine scratches or dull the finish. The safest approach is gentle, regular maintenance.
Start with a soft dry cloth
For ordinary dust and fingerprints, begin with a clean microfibre cloth. Wipe lightly rather than pressing hard, especially on mirror-polished surfaces where fine marks are more visible.
What if a dry cloth is not enough?
Use a slightly damp soft cloth if the manufacturer's care instructions allow it, then dry the surface immediately. Leaving water droplets to air-dry can create visible spotting.
Avoid abrasive cleaners
Scouring pads, abrasive powders and rough cloths can scratch polished metal. Strong chemicals can also affect coatings and surrounding materials, so do not use them unless they are specifically approved for the finish.
What is different about PVD?
PVD refers to a process used to create a thin decorative surface layer on metal. It can provide a refined, consistent finish, but the surface should still be protected from impact, scratching and harsh cleaning products.
How do you reduce fingerprints?
Regular light wiping is better than waiting for residue to build up. Handle decorative metal frames with clean hands and avoid resting oily or wet objects directly on polished surfaces.
Protect the finish during everyday use
Use coasters and felt pads where appropriate, and lift decorative objects rather than dragging them across metal or tabletop surfaces.
