Casa Royale Versailles Royale blue sofa set

How to Choose a Sofa Colour: Beige, Black, Blue or Emerald?

The sofa is usually one of the largest blocks of colour in a living room, so its colour affects the entire space. Rather than choosing only from a small fabric sample, consider the room as a whole.

Beige and cream sofas

Light neutrals reflect more light and can make a room feel calm and open. They pair easily with gold, chrome, timber and stone, but they may require more frequent cleaning in busy households.

Black and midnight sofas

Dark sofas create strong contrast and can make metallic details stand out. They work especially well in bright rooms with pale walls and flooring. In a small dark room, however, too many dark surfaces can make the space feel heavier.

Blue sofas

Blue can be used almost like a neutral when the shade is deep and balanced. Royal and navy tones work well with cream walls, marble-look surfaces and warm metallic accents.

Emerald sofas

Emerald is a statement choice that brings depth and richness to a room. It works particularly well when the rest of the palette is controlled: soft cream walls, neutral flooring and a small number of repeated gold or black accents.

Should your sofa match the rug?

It does not need to match exactly. A better approach is to repeat one or two colours from the sofa in the rug, artwork or cushions. This creates coordination without making the room look like a showroom set.

Should your sofa be lighter or darker than the floor?

Contrast usually helps. A dark sofa on a pale floor creates definition; a light sofa can lift a darker floor. If both are similar in tone, use a rug to create separation.
